The question was - I was trying to return a huge lob. The ball went over my head and I ran back and got in position. As I took a swing, my racquet touched the fence before it hit the ball -- the ball NEVER hit the fence and the return was good. Can I hit the fence before I hit the ball?

Good question.

If the ball had hit the fence, then you would have lost the point. The only things you CANNOT TOUCH are the net, the net, the center straps, the net cord, the posts, singles sticks (if available) and your opponents court. You can whack anything else.
